Guide
Modes
Drum Dojo works in two modes. Practice generates random training beats for you to read; Custom is a beat creator for writing your own. Both show real drum notation and share the same playback, saving, and sharing tools.
Two Ways To Practice
Start here: each card is one mode, what it is for, and how a session flows.
Practice — random training beats
The generator writes short reading lines for you, so there is always a page of unfamiliar notation to read.
- Pick a pattern, meter, and difficulty
- Read the generated lines, playing each one back as needed
- Randomize the set for a fresh page
Custom — beat creator
You write the beat yourself, note by note, from a two-bar groove to a full transcription.
- Start from a preset or a blank grid
- Place kick, snare, and hi-hat hits with ghosts and accents
- Play it back, save it, and share it
Practice Settings
Five settings shape what the generator writes — Pattern, Mode, Time, Difficulty, and one Bar 2 behavior. Change any of them and the next set follows.
Pattern
Eighths
A steady eighth-note grid: hits land on the beat and & counts.
Sixteenths
A full 16th-note grid where hits can land on any 1-e-and-a position.
Mixed
Each beat can switch between eighth-note and 16th-note movement inside one line.
Mode
Conventional
Groove-oriented: the hi-hat keeps time, the kick favors strong starts, and the snare favors backbeats.
True Random
Anything-goes: hi-hat, kick, and snare are placed independently at every position.
Time
4/4
Four quarter-note beats.
3/4
Three quarter-note beats.
6/8
Two dotted-quarter pulses grouped 3+3.
5/4 (3+2)
Five quarter-note beats grouped 3+2.
5/4 (2+3)
Five quarter-note beats grouped 2+3.
7/8 (3+2+2)
Seven eighth-note beats grouped 3+2+2.
7/8 (2+3+2)
Seven eighth-note beats grouped 2+3+2.
7/8 (2+2+3)
Seven eighth-note beats grouped 2+2+3.
Difficulty
Easy Beginning
Sparse, anchored grooves. In True Random mode, each drum uses 20% per-position density.
Medium Intermediate
Adds off-beat bass drum and occasional snare movement. In True Random mode, each drum uses 35% per-position density.
Hard Expert
Busy syncopation, off-beat snare, and kick/snare stacks. In True Random mode, each drum uses 50% per-position density.
Bar 2
Repeat
Bar 2 repeats bar 1 exactly.
Independent
Bar 2 is generated separately under the same settings.
Set Controls
Bass 16ths
On Eighths + Hard + Conventional, an extra toggle splits eligible kick hits into 16th-note pairs for a denser bass-drum read.
Lines
Show 2, 4, 8, 16 lines at once. Each line is one 2-bar exercise.
Randomize Set
Rewrites every line on the page while keeping all of the settings above.
Beat Creator
The custom writer is a step grid: click positions to place hits, and the notation and playback follow along live.
Grid and bars
Write on an eighth-note or 16th-note grid in any supported meter, from 1 to 999 bars — enough for a whole song.
Presets
Start from 73 built-in patterns scoped to the selected meter, at least 3 per difficulty tier — including the four-bar Amen Break.
Drums and articulations
Closed Hi-Hat, Bass Drum, Snare Drum. Every hit can be normal, ghost, or accent, and the notation shows the difference.
Your pattern library
Signed in, saved beats sit in a sidebar next to the writer: load one, keep editing, save changes or a copy, or delete it. The page warns before you leave unsaved work behind.
On Both Pages
Playback, saving, and sharing work the same way whether a beat was generated or written by hand.
Tempo
Playback runs from 30 to 300 BPM, with 92 BPM as the default.
Playback
Every notation line has its own play control, sounded in the browser at the current tempo.
Notation
Beats render as standard single-voice drum-set notation — stems up, rests only where nothing sounds, accents above the note.
Save and share
With a free account, save any generated line or custom beat, then publish an unlisted share link anyone can open for read-only notation and playback.
